The Moral Competence Test (MCT)
as an N=1 Experiment

   

The MCT has been constructed on the basis of Lind´s Dual Aspect Theory of moral judgment and development to assess subjects' moral judgment competence. Though it is based on our Dual-Aspect-Theory of moral behavior and our definition of moral competence as the ability to solve problems and conflicts on the basis if moral pri ciples through deliberation and discussion instead of through violence, deceit, or submission to others. The MCT is based on the new concept of Experimental Questionnairs (Lind 1982). The MCT is designed as a 3-factorial multivariate, N=1 experiment, with one of the variates being a moral task (see the literature quoted on this web-site for more details). The task is to rate arguments according to their moral quality (stae) rather than to other aspects (like opinion agreement) in the face of counter-argument. The main index of the MCT, the C-score, reflects the degree to which the subjects are able to cope with this task.

Calculating C-scores for tests that do not contain a moral task, is not meaningful, whatsoever.

Being an "Experimental Questionnaire," the MCT has been constructed on the basis of an elaborated psychological theory, and validated against several psychological criteria. These criteria are more rigorous than conventional criteria of test analysis and allow for rigorous checks on the cross-cultural validity of translated versions.
