Applying the MCT to Ss with Little or Low Quality Education |
If your sample is characterized by low educational achievement, the circumstances of the test administration are crucial. The MJT is an achievement test and thus susceptible to various influences:
Even slight time pressure can lower the C-scores considerably, e.g., when the test administrator indicates that the test should be completed before a certain time, or the Ss have private reasons to speed up their responses. Therefore, we try to make sure that no time pressure exists and we give the MJT at an early time when we include it in a battery of test questions.
Letter type and size can become another (irrelevant) difficulty for Ss with low educational achievement; we usually blow up the type face and shorten the response scale from a 9-point scale to a 5-point scale.
We also recommend doing individual test application (rather than group testing) and give more help in responding to such questionnaires prior to filling in the test.
With the posttest, the repetition of the test can make the Ss suspect that they are double-checked or they just feel bored... more.
If you were not able to use these changes in your study, you may want to deal with them in your discussion of the findings.
